Spanning over forty-three miles from the steep slopes of the Wasatch Mountains is 155 year-old Provo City, the heart of Utah County. Provo has grown from a quiet, small Mormon city to a substantial modern metropolitan area. Some of its traditional quaintness is gone, but its heart and soul continue to thrive through the diverse population that calls Provo home.
Cities throughout the country struggle with the decline of their downtown neighborhoods as urban sprawl has pulled families and businesses into other areas. Provo is no exception and much of the downtown area has struggled with the blight of neglect and deterioration. NHS was formed in 1994 by concerned neighbors in the downtown area to address this problem and strives to ensure safe neighborhoods through revitalization and homeownership efforts.
NHS and the Provo City Government have partnered to further promote the self-sufficiency of its neighborhoods and coordinates large-scale restoration projects annually. The 2005 Pride In Provo project utilized thousands of community volunteers to combat the deterioration of approximately 70 homes in the Provost neighborhood. Homeowners within the low-moderate income range were assisted with basic and emergency home repair and maintenance to decrease the risk of further decline. Volunteers provided assistance with roof, porch and foundation repair, exterior painting, window and door replacements, landscaping, fence repair and yard clean up. This area was chosen because of the declining physical conditions within the neighborhood. The physical condition of a home or building affects the level of confidence people feel. Criminal activity can easily take root in places where it appears people don’t care about their surroundings. NHS has focused mostly on working within the pioneer neighborhoods of the downtown area, and has partnered with the city in this outward expansion of neighborhood beautification due to the high percentage of low to moderate-income families and individuals living there. Most of the work took place during large Saturday events on April 30th, May 7th, 14th, 21st, and June 4th. June 4th was also the main celebration for National NeighborWorks Week and concluded the Pride in Provo project with donor and volunteer recognition and awards, as well as additional beautification projects within in downtown Provo. We look forward to continuing this annual project each year. Click here to see a power point presentation of PIP 2005. Pride In Provo 2006PIP 2006 was in the Carterville and Dixon neighborhoods. There were over 28 homes painted and landscaped on June 3rd and June 10th. We want to thank all of our 800 volunteers for their wonderful work and willingness to serve their friends and neighbors! Without them the entire project would have failed miserably. A special thanks is also due to the neighborhood chairpersons who worked so hard to bring the projects and volunteers together. What a great team! NHS did not have the opportunity to host an AmeriCorps team this year, as they were serving families devastated by hurricanes. Hopefully we will be blessed by their assistance in 2007 so that more Provo homeowners can receive benefits like the previous years large event. On June 2nd, our efforts were in the Dixon Neighborhood painting two homes and landscaping another. It was a wonderful success thanks to the hard work of over 100 volunteers! On June 9th we focused on the Joaquin & Maeser neighborhoods and had the help of over 300 volunteers! Five homes were painted, including one home that was part of the Freedom Festival’s Colonial Days. NHS of Provo would like to extend a huge thank you to the volunteers, homeowners, the Utah County Realtors Association, First American Title Company, and to several BYU Wards and Youth groups for volunteering their time. We would also like to thank American Family Insurance for their generous donation to help fund both weeks of the project; Nuskin for their donation towards paint for one of the homes in Joaquin; and American Scaffolding for providing the scaffolding used at all the project sites. We would also like to give special thanks to our Neighborhood Chairs, Judy Kelsch – Dixon, Kurt Peterson – Joaquin, and Tom Deforest – Maeser for helping us with another successful year.
